Irish FM Urges EU to Suspend Israel Agreement Over Human Rights Concerns

(MENAFN) Ireland’s foreign minister has called for the European Union to take action against Israel, saying the country is “very clearly violating human rights” and urging the suspension of its cooperation agreement with the bloc, or at least its trade components.

Speaking ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg, Helen McEntee said Ireland, along with Spain and Slovenia, had sent a letter to the EU’s foreign policy chief requesting a review of the EU-Israel agreement in light of developments in the Middle East.

She stressed that the European Union must uphold its core values and ensure that countries it maintains agreements with respect international law and human rights obligations, according to her remarks.

McEntee also referred to a recent Israeli legislative proposal involving the death penalty, which she said disproportionately affects Palestinians, describing it as “completely unacceptable.”

She said the three countries were calling for either a full suspension of the agreement or at minimum a suspension of its trade provisions.

The Irish minister also noted what she described as increasing concern within the EU over Israel’s recent actions, pointing to growing dissatisfaction among European leaders.

She further highlighted the situation in the occupied West Bank, citing the approval of dozens of new settlements in recent weeks and what she described as rising levels of violence in the territory.
