European Leaders Demand Diplomatic Action After U.S. Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) Several European nations expressed serious apprehension on Sunday regarding recent U.S. airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, calling on all sides to prioritize peaceful dialogue and prevent further escalation. Some officials condemned the U.S. operation as an "unlawful attack."

Saturday’s American strikes on critical nuclear sites in Iran have heightened instability in an already fragile region. Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general, confirmed on Sunday that the facilities suffered damage but noted the agency is still unable to evaluate the full extent.

Grossi emphasized the critical role of diplomacy to end the conflict and facilitate the IAEA’s return to monitoring activities within Iran. "We have to allow the IAEA inspectors to return. The IAEA is ready to play its indispensable role in this process ... We have to work for peace," he declared.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called for calming tensions and an end to the violence spiral in the Middle East. On the platform X, he stressed, "De-escalation, restraint, and a return to talks and diplomacy are now of utmost importance."

Finnish President Alexander Stubb labeled the U.S. strikes as "of exceptional scale" and cautioned against perpetuating retaliatory cycles. Writing on X, he stated, "A sustainable solution requires diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for international law."

Slovenia’s Prime Minister Robert Golob also advocated for renewed diplomatic negotiations. His Sunday statement highlighted that ongoing military actions only deepen the suffering of innocent civilians. Echoing United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Golob reaffirmed that peace and dialogue remain the sole paths forward.

The Slovenian Foreign Ministry expressed parallel concerns about rising tensions, warning that further conflict risks undermining global peace and civilian safety. "Diplomacy and dialogue must prevail, and war must be avoided," the ministry affirmed, reaffirming commitment to the UN Charter.
